Promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs the previous season, the Ipswich Town team of George Burley was one of the major surprises of the 2000-01 season. An offensive and fluid team made up of solid professionals like Matt Holland, Richard Wright, Herman Hreidarsson, Jim Magilton, and James Scowcroft was further elevated by the remarkable scoring form of Marcus Stewart, who scored 19 goals in the league and 21 in all competitions. For much of the season, Town remained in the top three before ultimately finishing in fifth place, which earned them a spot in European competition for the first time in nearly two decades.
